Every major religion has expectations for the
return of a great spiritual teacher
 Christians hope
for the return of Christ, Jews await the Messiah, Moslems look for the Imam Mahdi or
Messiah, Hindus expect Krishna, and Buddhists anticipate the Fifth (Maitreya) Buddha.
According to esoteric teachings all of these are different names for the same individual:
the World Teacher, whose personal name is Maitreya (My-TRAY-uh). Very soon, every eye
shall see & every ear shall hear Him.
The Teacher
Preferring to be known simply as 'the Teacher', Maitreya has not come as a
religious leader or to found a new religion, but as teacher and guide for people of every
religion and those of no religion. He has come "like a thief in the night," (Peter
3:10) when least expected and will (with the help of Jesus and the other Masters of
Wisdom) inspire humanity to create a civilization characterized by brotherhood, justice,
and right relationship based upon a more equitable sharing of the world's resources.
"Christ" 
According to esoteric teachings the word "Christ" is a title for a
position or function within the Spiritual Hierarchy of Masters (also known as the
Brotherhood, the Church Invisible, etc.). It is a group of very advanced beings with high
degrees of 'Christ Consciousness' who guide our evolution from behind the scenes. Whoever
stands at the head of this Hierarchy is known as the Christ. The present holder of that
office, Maitreya, the Master of all the Masters, has been the Christ for the past 2,600
years. His energies work through men and women of goodwill everywhere, regardless of
religious, philosophical, or political affiliations.
 "It is a fallacy to believe, as some do, that the main trend of Christ's
work will be through the medium of the churches or the world religions...He will use all
available channels whereby the consciousness of man may be enlarged and right orientation
be brought about...the churches are but one of the teaching avenues He will employ...
He will not come as the restorer of any of the ancient religions including
Christianity, but He will come to restore man's faith in the Father's love, in the fact of
the livinginess of the Christ and in the close, subjective and unbreakable relationship of
all men everywhere..."
"[His] reappearance will knit & bind together all men & women of
goodwill throughout the world, irrespective of religion or nationality..." (The Tibetan)
