Angels among us
by Bette Stockbauer

Between 1919 and 1949 a remarkable collaborative effort between a religious teacher named Alice Bailey and a Tibetan spiritual Master named Djwhal Khul (DK) resulted in the publication of over 20 books which released to the Western world, for the first time, information describing the spiritual universe, those planes of being which underlay the everyday physical world. Although much cosmological information is relayed in these volumes, the teachings primarily emphasize the relationship between the human kingdom and the spiritual kingdom above it, called the Spiritual Hierarchy.

This spiritual kingdom is comprised of highly advanced human beings who have so purified their lower nature they have evolved into a totally new realm of expression. Known as the Masters of Wisdom, they have become invisible to ordinary vision, but continue to inspire, protect, and influence the human kingdom so it can attain a like accomplishment.

One of the last volumes in the series, called The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, was written during the tragic years of WW I and WW II. One would expect a more somber tone, but DK outlines a daring vision for the future times. He predicts that humanity is on the verge of an expansion in consciousness which will lead to a positive transformation in all its institutions. This expansion will be one of the most important transition points in the history of the race.

He says that one action which will hasten this result will be the return of certain members of the Spiritual Hierarchy to physical plane life. Over time, he says, they will quietly take up residence in our cities and towns. Living as ordinary citizens they will begin to help us reform the world by their great wisdom and participation in our affairs. They will be instrumental in helping our successful transition from the Piscean era into that of Aquarius.

In discussing the work of the Christ, who is the leader of all the Masters, Djwhal Khul emphasizes that He never really left the world, but simply disappeared from phenomenal existence. Indeed for all of these past 2000 years he has been intimately connected with the earth, spreading everywhere the love He perfected in Palestinian days. In our era He plans to bring to fruition the work He then began. His major objective will be to cure the debilitating separativeness that characterizes many aspects of human life.

To accomplish this He will direct the work of the Masters reentering the earthly plane, and fulfilling the Biblical promise to return, He will Himself live and walk among us. The powerful spiritual energies these entities bring will influence humanity to cure its ancient antagonisms and begin to function in unity. Concepts of goodwill and brotherhood will inspire actions which will cure the problems of starvation and war.

Neither the Christ, nor the Masters, DK claims, will arrive in a blaze of glory. Rather they will let their work speak for them, so that people will know first, by the signs of positive change in the world, the reality of their presence. When enough people have accepted the necessity for a new way of life, they will begin to work more openly.

Fulfillment

If one surveys the past 20 years of our planet's history it is almost impossible to claim that nothing extraordinary has happened. Practically without bloodshed, Germany has been reunited, the major powers are reducing armaments, and in South Africa apartheid is no longer an official policy. The strict divisions between churches are crumbling; racism, sexism, and ageism are no longer considered acceptable

For other signs of the Masters' presence, we need only read the newspaper or watch TV. In Medjugorje children receive messages from one they say is the mother of Jesus. Crosses of light appear in window panes of homes and churches throughout the United States. Long lines of pilgrims patiently wait to collect water that is said to possess healing powers in Mexico, Germany and India. Statues, icons and pictures of Mary or Jesus bleed, wink, weep, and move, thus inspiring worshippers to greater devotion.

Sai Baba, the miracle worker extraordinaire, attracts millions to his ashram in a remote province of India. Also in India inert statues of the Elephant God Ganesh seemingly drink from offerings of milk-filled spoons. A few days of these 'Milk Miracles' slows to a crawl the business of a nation and bankrupts its store of milk. Looking to the skies, there are UFOs to fill our minds with wonder, and on the earth we find the enigmatic crop circles, so startling in beauty and design.

If that is not enough, people are coming shyly forth with stories they have hidden for years. They describe kind-hearted strangers who suddenly appear, on forsaken roads or obscure places to proffer help, fix a tire, rescue a child, or save a life in a frozen blizzard.

These are the wonders the Master predicted.

Spreading His Love

There are many in the world who claim to know the Christ and the Masters are here, who have had a vision, a healing, or merely an inner knowing. It is a leap of faith to act and speak on such knowledge, to brave the possible ridicule and doubt. But is it really so different to say to someone, "The Christ is in the world," than to say "I believe in angels - or healing waters - or weeping icons?" It is, in a sense, one and the same thing. It is a belief in the unseen parameters of existence, the mysterious world behind the veil of everyday reality.

And in the end, DK explains, belief will not be of such importance, for there will be thousands who neither know nor care about the return of the Masters. But their lives will express the love of the Christ. They will see to the needs of the starving brother, or comfort the soul of a destitute child. They will begin to do what the Masters do - to salvage, inspire, and heal those less fortunate on the path of life. By this we will know that the hierarchy is here. By this we will know that the Christ is among us, spreading His love into the world.

The ideas discussed are based on the work of 3 Christian esotericists: Helena Blavatsky, Alice Bailey, and Benjamin Creme.
